Berghaupten Castle

Berghaupten Castle is a former aristocratic country estate in Berghaupten in the Kinzig Valley and today houses the town hall. The first owner mentioned in a document from 1456 was Balthasar von Wartenberg, later Schultheiß of Gengenbach. After him, it came into the possession of various families until it became municipal property in 1831. Old documents show that this castle was rebuilt in 1622 and was surrounded by a moat. The Barons von Schleiß had it torn down again and rebuilt in 1788 as it still stands today. In Berghaupten, there was a second small castle, a "Schlössle", in the Hub district, but it was only a small hunting lodge. However, like Berghaupten Castle, it has completely disappeared. It originally belonged to Baron Heinrich von Mercy, a local lord of Berghaupten, and is mentioned in a document in 1669.
