On the western edge of Bergheim's old village center in Northern Hesse lies Schloss Bergheim. It is an example of early Classicist architecture.

History+

The origins of Schloss Bergheim date back to the Middle Ages, when a smaller fortified seat existed on this site. In 1692, the current castle was built for Count Christian Ludwig von Waldeck. He transferred the estate, along with the villages of Bergheim, Mehlen, and Königshagen, as a paragium to his son Josias from his second marriage. Josias thus founded the comital secondary line of Waldeck-Bergheim, which existed until 1938. Between 1785 and 1786, the castle underwent an expansion in the early Classicist style under Count Josias II von Waldeck-Bergheim, carried out by the Kassel master builder Simon Louis du Ry.
