Berka Castle

The origins of the castle date back to the 12th century, with the mention of Knight Lupoldus von Berge. From 1196, the Lords of Creuzburg, feudal lords in Berka vor dem Hainich and Bischofroda, shaped the region for over four centuries. They are considered the builders of a moated castle on the western edge of the village, the predecessor of today's castle. After destruction during the Thirty Years' War and a fire in 1650, only the wide moat and the foundation walls of the moated castle remained. The von Döhlen family, who inherited the property, initiated a reconstruction as a country estate. Later, Zacharias Prueschenck von Lindenhofen, son-in-law of the former owner, had a modern manor farm built.
