Bernau Castle
Bernau Castle, also known as Pernau Water Castle, is located in the municipality of Fischlham in the district of Wels-Land.
The first mention of Pernau concerned a predecessor building from 1189, attributed to a Timo de pernowe. The Pernauers resided here until the 15th century. In 1405, Joachim Pernauer sold his seat to Wolfgang Anhanger zu Köppach. In 1449, the brothers Wolfgang and Hans Jörger Pernau inherited the castle from the Anhangers. The Oberhaimers bought the estate from the Jörgers and converted it into a water castle. In 1616, the castle belonged to Sigmund Jagenreuter, who sold it back to Sigmund Spindler von Hofegg. In 1730, Leopold von Eyselsberg acquired Pernau Castle from Veit Jakob Spindler and had it rebuilt in Baroque style. The executing architect was Wolf Grinzenberger from Wels. From 1766 to 1793, the Gabelkovens were the owners of the dominion, although Count Alois Spindler was able to buy the castle back in 1793. In 1798, Carl Annacher bought the property from him. From 1810, Wolfgang and Franziska Tiefentaler were the owners. In 1907, the castle and estate came to Julius Theuer. From his heirs, the castle was sold to the Hatschek family from Vöcklabruck.
Castle Construction+
The three-story and almost square castle stands on a high plinth on a conglomerate rock. This has protected the castle from water damage. The access is built on piles. Round towers project from the four corners. In addition, wide buttresses are attached, which provide the necessary support to the outer walls rising from the water. A masonry bridge leads over the moat to the gate. The rooms on the ground floor are accessible from a central corridor, a spiral staircase leads to the upper floors, there is no inner courtyard.
Opposite the castle stands the associated four-winged farmstead. An archway leads under a square gate tower to the farmstead. Baroque putti stand in the courtyard. Today, the guesthouse "Schloss Bernau", which offers accommodation, also belongs to the castle.
Present Day+
In 1979, the Handlbauer family acquired the castle and had it stylishly renovated in the following years. From 1993 to 1997, the artist Anton Krajnc redesigned the former castle chapel in the right corner tower in memory of Doris, the young deceased daughter of Herbert and Gerhild Handlbauer. The interiors were extensively renovated from 1998 onwards with a view to sensible use.
The castle is available for concerts, cultural and scientific conferences, readings and exhibitions, as well as for celebrations (weddings, birthdays, balls, etc.).
In 2007, the castle owners received the Monument Preservation Award of the State of Upper Austria.
