Bernegg Castle (Kreuzlingen)

The first documented mention of the name "Bernegg" dates back to 1292 in a document from Constance. Around 1365, the Bernegg estate was managed by Heinrich Gottschalk. According to reports, the building was allegedly burned down by Confederates in 1499 and subsequently rebuilt. In 1543, Jakob Ammann of Emmishofen is named as the owner. Around 1623, the Barons of Rassler zu Kirchberg acquired the estate, but exchanged it in 1626 for Brunegg Castle. Under Diethelm Hegner-Ziehlin, a citizen of Winterthur and chief bailiff of the Altenklingen lordship, two bay windows were added to the building and the cellar was expanded. At that time, there were numerous outbuildings, including a vintner's house, a floret factory, a dye works, a wash house, and stables. In 1702, Bernegg came into the possession of Johann Ulrich Merhart-Mallenbrey, and the Merhart family remains the owner to this day. In 1786, the privilege was granted to maintain a private altar at Bernegg. In 1795, a four-story central building was erected south of the existing residential house, resulting in the current facade measuring 34 meters in length and 24 meters in height. In 1807, the house was incorporated into a Merhart family entailment (Fideikommiss-Majorat), meaning it passed to the eldest son of the lineage. After the extinction of the Majorat lineage in 1872, the property became part of a family entailment (Fideikommiss-Seniorat), whereby the house and land remained family property, but the usufruct was reserved for the eldest male member of the lineage. A comprehensive renovation took place in 1898, which also included the demolition of the southern roof structure. The last major renovation occurred in 1951, and since 2006, the gardens have been renewed and extensive renovation work on the house has been carried out.

Bernegg Castle is located in Kreuzlingen in the district of Kreuzlingen in the Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 445 meters above sea level.

Bernegg Castle is currently in private ownership and is undergoing extensive renovation, including the renewal of its garden grounds.
