Berteroda Castle

The current Berteroda Castle was built in 1626 on the massive foundations of older predecessor buildings, which also include the large barrel cellar. During the Thirty Years' War, Berteroda was also repeatedly ravaged by mercenary bands, and the looters did not stop even at the seemingly secure castles of the rural nobility. The original arrangement of the buildings and the manor house can no longer be clearly identified today. The once defensive character of the manor house was also largely abandoned at this time. The east side with the current entrance is well protected by projecting masonry. Meanwhile, the wall surrounds a small park. The estate also indirectly received natural protection from the village pond and the nearby stream - the Böber. On the north side of the castle wall, there is a firmly integrated late medieval loophole with the year 1597 carved in stone. On the west side, a semicircular tower is placed, built exactly at the most vulnerable point of the complex. The south side appears to be the most altered today. A traditional half-timbered floor was placed on the massive walls of the ground floor. The inscription "Anno 1626" above the main portal on the east side dates this construction phase. The interior of the building was probably rebuilt even more frequently. The castle itself served as a noble residence, was a school and inn, and finally a residential house. At times, the municipal offices were also housed there. In 1869, several farming families from the village acquired the castle estate and the lands and divided these properties among themselves. After extensive renovation work in recent years, Berteroda Castle today presents itself in a remarkable condition.
