In the Haßberge region, near the village of Manau, is Bettenburg Castle, a Renaissance mountain castle.

History+

The first documented mention of Bettenburg Castle dates back to 1231. Its strategic location on the Rennweg, once an important military and trade route, made it a key part of a defensive chain. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was destroyed. Ten years later, in 1535, it was rebuilt under the direction of Knight Balthasar Truchseß, with the rebels being held responsible for the damages. Until 1940, the castle served as the residence of the noble Truchseß family, who remain its owners to this day.
