Biberstein Castle

The origins of Biberstein Castle date back to the late Middle Ages. The first known builder was Marchwart der Pybriacher, who served as a regional judge in Himmelberg from 1382. In 1396, Duke Wilhelm enfeoffed him with this noble seat. A turning point occurred in 1571 when the castle passed into the possession of Georg Khevenhüller through an exchange of estates. In 1662, Katharina Countess Lodron acquired the property for 118,000 guilders, funded by the estate of the deceased Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron, to establish it as the seat of a secundogeniture. Since then, the castle has remained in the private ownership of the Lodron family.

Biberstein Castle is located in Himmelberg, a municipality in the Feldkirchen district of Carinthia, Austria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 680 meters above sea level.
