Biedenkopf Castle

Dendrochronological studies date the construction of the northern tower of the original castle to after 1175. A family named von Biedencap(h) was first mentioned in the late 12th century, with its first representative, Harmouthdus von Biedencaph, serving as a ministerialis of the Archbishops of Cologne. Around 1231, the castle came into the possession of Landgrave Konrad of Thuringia, who administered the Hessian estates of the Ludowingians and initiated the founding of the town of Biedenkopf. The complex served as a western border fortification under Landgrave Heinrich Raspe. Landgrave Otto I of Hesse relocated the castle to its current site on the south side of the hill after 1296. Between 1360 and 1365, the castle underwent expansion under Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse. In the 15th century, particularly between 1455–1460 and 1480–1483, the palas was rebuilt. From the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle lost its importance and fell into disrepair; from 1579, the palas served as a granary.
