Birken Castle, a baroque complex in Bayreuth, began as a farmstead and evolved into a noble residence. It is now privately owned.

History+

The origins of Birken Castle date back to 1507, when a farm was first documented on this site. In 1684, Margrave Christian Ernst transferred the property to his court marshal Hans Wilhelm von Erffa to settle outstanding payments. Between 1687 and 1692, after the demolition of the original farm, a baroque castle was built, complemented by a garden and a tea house, designed by Charles Philippe Dieussart. In 1740, Christiane Charlotte Freifrau von Stein established a foundation that, from 1756, provided accommodation and care for noble widows or unmarried ladies.
