Construction and Early Years

The castle was built in 1706 by Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Ecker zu Karpfing as a hunting lodge. After this, the owners changed several times. In 1826, Baron Karl Theodor Maria Hubert Isidor von Hallberg-Broich acquired the castle and began draining the Erdinger Moos. In 1925, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart acquired the castle and established a home for at-risk youth (Jugendwerk Birkeneck) in the castle.
