An 18th-century castle complex in Lower Franconia is situated in Birkenfeld, a district of Maroldsweisach in the Haßberge district. It is distinguished by its conception as a rural villa, where the main residential building and the entire farm complex were constructed according to a unified plan between 1738 and 1752.

History+

Birkenfeld's origins date back to the early 14th century, when it was owned by ministeriales of the Counts of Henneberg. Around 1350, the estate belonged to the Zollner family, and by the end of the 15th century, the Lords of Hutten resided here. After the death of the last Hutten owner, Johann Philipp Friedrich, ownership passed to the von Wöllwarth family. In the 19th century, the Counts of Ortenburg inherited the castle, which remains in their private possession today.
