History+
The construction of Birkenfeld Castle took place between 1819 and 1821 under Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg. Between 1850 and 1884, the main building was expanded with a smaller annex on its left side. From 1945 onwards, the castle was utilized by the French occupation forces. A renovation of the complex occurred from 1995 to 2002.
