Biržai Castle in Lithuania is distinguished by its location on the artificial Lake Širvėna. Originally designed as an earth bastion-type castle, it served as a defensive structure.

History+

The construction of Biržai Castle began in 1586 under the direction of Krzysztof Mikołaj Radziwiłł. As early as 1575, in preparation for the construction, a dam was built on the Agluona and Apaščia rivers, creating the artificial Lake Širvėna, covering approximately 40 km². The main construction work on the castle was completed in 1589.
