Bissingen Castle

The history of Bissingen dates back to around 1140, when a local nobleman named Ruodbert von Bissingen was first mentioned in documents. After several changes of ownership, including to the Counts of Oettingen and the Lords Schenk von Schenkenstein, the place came into the possession of Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach, an Augsburg mercenary leader, in 1557. He had the current castle built for his son Hans, which was completed in 1560. A few years later, the complex was reinforced with a wall. As early as 1568, after his father's death, Baron Konrad von Bemelberg the Younger acquired the dominion of Hohenburg-Bissingen.
