History+
The castle's origins date back to 1123, when Lothar von Süpplingenburg had the Blankenburg built on the Blankenstein. Later, the feudal suzerainty passed to the Welfs. In 1128, Poppo of the Reginbodones received the county as a fief, which his sons divided: Siegfried I received Blankenburg. After his death, ownership passed to his sons Heinrich and Siegfried II. In 1181, the castle was besieged by imperial armies and in 1182, it was conquered and plundered. The brothers regained the county after peace was restored and began a new construction and expansion. Until 1343, Blankenburg remained in the possession of Siegfried II's descendants before falling to the younger Heimburger line of the Regensteiner family.
