In the municipality of Zweisimmen in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, is Blankenburg Castle. Today, it serves as the official residence of the District Governor of Obersimmental and is a late Baroque country estate.

History+

The first documented mention of Blankenburg Castle dates back to 1329, when it was owned by the Lords of Düdingen. In 1371, the complex passed to the city of Fribourg. During the Burgdorf War in 1383, Bern conquered the castle, which has since served as a Bernese administrative seat. A fire in 1767 destroyed the original castle.
