Blumenfeld Castle

The site's origins date back to the 11th century, when an initial castle complex of the Knights of Blumegg was built there, first documented in 1362. In the 14th century, the Lords of Klingenberg expanded the fortifications. The castle was destroyed in the Swabian War of 1499 by Swiss troops. After its acquisition by the Teutonic Order Commandery of Mainau in 1511, a new castle was erected on the same site to serve as the official residence for the Mainau High Bailiff. The south wing was added in 1515 on the foundations of the old palas, and between 1578 and 1582, another wing was added to the north side. After a period of decay in the 18th century, a renovation took place from 1759 to 1762.
