Blumenthal Castle

Blumenthal Castle is located on the Ecknach river between the Aichach district of Klingen and the municipality of Sielenbach, or the Bavarian pilgrimage site of Maria Birnbaum (Aichach-Friedberg district).

The originally four-winged moated castle in the Renaissance style with an extensive forecourt and farmstead was first mentioned in a document in 1296. It was a commandery of the Teutonic Order in the Bailiwick of Franconia and from 1396 the main seat of the commanders. Extensive alterations took place in the second half of the 16th and the first half of the 18th century. From 1806, the complex was owned by the Fugger Foundation Administration for almost 200 years. As part of this change of ownership, probably three of the four Renaissance wings were demolished.

In 2007, Blumenthal was acquired by private investors. The ensemble is currently being restored as part of a tourist and gastronomic utilization concept.

Within the extensive castle complex, the old brewery building, the beer garden, and the baroque Liebfrauenkapelle (Chapel of Our Lady) are worth seeing. East of Blumenthal stands St. George's Chapel, of which only the tower remains.
