Bodelschwingh Castle

Haus Bodelschwingh is a moated castle. It was built in the 13th century by the von Bodelschwingh family and remains in the original family ownership to this day.
Bodelschwingh Castle, along with the moated castles Haus Dellwig and Haus Rodenberg, is the largest and most significant moated castle in Dortmund. The entire castle complex rests on oak piles.
An settlement, the Burgfreiheit Bodelschwingh, developed early near the castle and maintained its independence until 1928. Today, the district of Bodelschwingh belongs to the Mengede urban district.
A part of the widely branched von Bodelschwingh family later lived in Bergkamen-Velmede and at Haus Heyde near Unna, which was the actual center of the family in the 19th century.
The castle today serves as the residence of the zu Inn- und Knyphausen family. It is registered as a historical monument in the monument list of the city of Dortmund.
