The origins of Bodenengern Castle date back to 1053, when it was first built and provided with a moat. Following its destruction, it was rebuilt in 1673. For a long time, the estate served as the residence and ancestral seat for the noble family von Post.

The castle is located in the Rannenberg district of the Auetal municipality in the Schaumburg district, Lower Saxony, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 186 meters above sea level.
