History of Bodenengern Castle+

The old moated castle Bodenengern was built in 1053 and provided with a moat. In 1673 it was rebuilt and served as home to the knightly family von Post. Today it is surrounded by a moat and situated in the middle of greenery.

Architectural Features+

The castle is a prime example of medieval defensive architecture, combined with later Renaissance modifications. The main building consists of three wings, arranged around a central courtyard.

The Main Tower

The impressive main tower, also known as the "Bergfried", dates back to the original construction period. With its massive walls and narrow loopholes, it served as the last refuge in times of siege.

The Chapel

Within the castle complex is a small, well-preserved chapel. It features frescoes from the 14th century depicting scenes from the life of Saint George, the patron saint of the von Post family.

The von Post Family+

The von Post family played a significant role in the regional history of Bodenengern. They owned the castle for over 500 years and shaped its development.

  • Sir Kuno von Post (1020-1090): Founder of the castle and a respected knight.
  • Lady Adelheid von Post (1340-1410): Known for her extensive library and patronage of the arts.
  • Baron Friedrich von Post (1630-1700): Responsible for the extensive reconstruction after the Thirty Years' War.
Bodenengern Today+

Today, Bodenengern Castle is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. It hosts various cultural events throughout the year, including medieval festivals and classical concerts.

Visitor Information+

The castle is open to visitors from April to October, daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Guided tours are offered hourly. There is also a small museum shop and a café on site.
