Bodenstein Castle
Bodenstein Castle is located on a plateau on the left side of the Regen river in Bodenstein, an eastern district of the Upper Palatinate town of Nittenau in the district of Schwandorf.
Bodenstein Castle was built in 1333/34. Bodenstein was founded by the Michelsberg family. The three-story building encloses a small inner courtyard, from which a simple castle chapel is accessible. Two oil paintings of the peasant saints Isidor and Leonhard are worth mentioning among the furnishings. A two-arch stone bridge over the former moat separates the castle building from the extensive estate. In 1362, the brothers Christian and Otte von Michelsberg divided their property; Christian moved into the newly built castle, while Otto remained in Michelsberg.
In 1364, Christian der Michelsberger first called himself "zu dem Podenstein", meaning that he had built Bodenstein Castle and lived there.
Castle Chapel+
In 1525, a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin is mentioned in Bodenstein Castle, which had a privileged altar by 1651 at the latest. This may be the St. Michael's Altar mentioned as "damaged" in 1665. It seems that the church subsequently fell into disrepair, because in 1828/29, Baroness von Berchtolsheim built a chapel on her stately Bodenstein estate, which was consecrated in 1829 and received the patronage of Beatae Mariae Virginis.
