In Bodenstein, a district of the Upper Palatinate town of Nittenau, stands Bodenstein Castle, a structure that originated in the 14th century and architecturally fuses castle and manor.

History+

The origins of Bodenstein Castle date back to 1333/34, when it was founded by the Michelsberg family. A division of property occurred in 1362, when the brothers Christian and Otte von Michelsberg split their estates. Christian moved into the newly built castle, while Otto remained in Michelsberg. As early as 1364, Christian der Michelsberger first referred to himself as “zu dem Podenstein”. In 1525, a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin was mentioned within the castle, which later fell into disrepair. In 1828/29, Baroness von Berchtolsheim had a new chapel built, which was consecrated in 1829 and received the patronage of Beatae Mariae Virginis.
