History+
The origins of Börringekloster date back to around 1150, when Archbishop Eskil of Lund founded a Benedictine monastery. In the 14th century, the monastery underwent a Gothic-style renovation. With the introduction of the Reformation in Denmark under Christian III in 1536, the monastery was secularized. The king transferred ownership to the Brahe family, with the condition that they care for the former nuns, thus turning it into a home for noblewomen. During this period, much of the archive was lost, and the monastery church became the parish church of Börringe village. After several changes of ownership, including to Knud Gedde (1551) and Gorvel Sparre (1582), the latter had the old monastery church demolished and used its stones to build a new parish church, completed in 1587. Else Brade's tomb was reinterred in the new church.
