In the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, Böttstein Castle is situated on the left bank of the Aare River and today houses a hotel.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 11th century, when a castle stood on this site, inhabited by the Barons of Böttstein until the 13th century. In 1218, Knight Luthold von Böttstein, due to a debt, transferred lands and the church patronage of Buckheim to Mangold Chelhalda von Rheinfelden and his sons. Later, the castle and its associated property passed to the Lords of Tiefenstein. Hugo I of Tiefenstein sold this property to the Johanniter in Bubikon in 1239. In 1606, the brothers Johann Peter, Hans Walther, and Karl Emmanuel von Roll acquired the municipal area of Böttstein for 1,800 guilders.
