Bojnice Castle

The first documented mention of the complex dates back to 1113. Originally built of wood, the castle was gradually converted into stone, with the outer walls following the natural topography of the terrain. In 1302, the castle passed to Matthew Csák, an influential ruler of western and central Slovakia. Later, in the 15th century, King Matthias Corvinus was the owner, transferring the castle to his illegitimate son John Corvin in 1489. Matthias Corvinus valued Bojnice as a place for drafting royal decrees. After his death, the castle came into the possession of the Zápolya family. The Turzos, one of the wealthiest families in the northern Kingdom of Hungary, acquired the castle in 1528 and carried out extensive renovations in the Renaissance style. From 1646, the Pálffy family owned it, making further changes. However, the most significant reconstruction took place under Johann Pálffy between 1888 and 1909, giving the castle its current romantic appearance. Pálffy, himself an architect and collector, designed the castle in the style of French châteaux. After his death, his heirs sold the property to Jan Antonín Baťa in 1939. After 1945, the castle was confiscated by the Czechoslovak state. A fire in 1950 caused significant damage, after which the castle was rebuilt. Since then, it has housed a branch of the Slovak National Museum, dedicated to documenting and presenting postmodern architectural style, and was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1970.

Bojnice Castle is located in the town of Bojnice (Weinitz) in the Trenčiansky kraj (Trenčín) region of Western Slovakia, Slovakia. It stands at an elevation of approximately 310 m above sea level.

The castle is now open to visitors and houses a museum dedicated to the documentation and presentation of postmodern architectural style.
