Borgeby Castle

To be privately owned

Borgeby Castle, a historic structure in the municipality of Lomma in the southern Swedish province of Skåne, stands on the remains of an impressive Viking fortress. This complex, characterized by its long and eventful history, is a testament to various epochs and architectural styles.

History+

The origins of Borgeby Castle date back to the late 10th century, when a Viking fortress was built here. Archaeological finds suggest a connection to Harald Bluetooth. The original ring-shaped rampart, with a diameter of 150 meters, underwent several construction phases and had two moats before it burned down during the Viking Age. Excavations in 1998 uncovered a mint and confirmed that the castle belonged to the Archbishops of Lund until 1536. In the 14th century, it served as a stud farm. The castle was destroyed multiple times, for example in 1452 by Swedish troops and in 1658 by Danish forces. Another fire in the 16th century is suspected in connection with a peasant uprising in 1525. After the Reformation, the castle changed hands through mortgage to Jørgen Kock and later to various Danish and Swedish noble families. The so-called “Börjes Tower” likely dates from the 15th century, the gatehouse from the 16th century with older parts. The current main building was constructed between 1650 and 1660, and the brick stable building in 1744.
