Borghees Castle

The early history of the estate is not clearly documented, but in the 17th century, Borghees clearly emerged. In 1678, customs inspector Christoffel Rickers acquired the estate and had a country house built there two years later. This single-story building with a small central tower was later expanded to its current two-story form in the mid-18th century by Johann Peter Reinhard von Rickers, a grandson of the administrator. Through inheritance, the property passed to the Dutch Thooft family in 1804. After various changes of ownership and a period of agricultural use, during which a cheese dairy and an inn operated, the district of Rees acquired the small castle in 1964.
