Borna Castle

Borna Castle is located exactly between Oschatz, Strehla and Riesa and has more the character of a city villa than that of a castle. The castle building was only erected in 1877, after the previous building, an old manor house, was demolished. The situation is similar to that at Karrasburg in Radebeul, where a simple, new building was also built on the ancient walls of a moated castle. That the chronicle of the manor in Borna dates back to the 12th century is no longer recognizable. Here, too, a moated castle is the origin of the story. The Truchsesses of Borna, a family of servants from the Meissen region, are mentioned as owners at that time. Later, the estate came to the noble families of Grünrodt and von Starschedel. Gero Friedrich von Byern acquired the knight's estate in 1877. Their ancestral seat, the village of Biere, is located in the Magdeburg Börde. The new castle was built under this family. After the expropriation, a residential home for children and young people was established in 1947. Today it is a mothers' home.
