Bosfeld Castle

The Bosfeld estate is first mentioned at the end of the 16th century in the rent registers of Rheda. After various owners in the 17th century, the estate came into the possession of the ruling House of Bentheim in 1713. It remains in the possession of this family to this day. The existing building was converted at that time into the dower house of Countess Christiane Maria, using quarry stones from the crumbling tower of Rheda Castle. This was followed by a lease for agricultural use and from 1769 to 1773, it was used as a porcelain and faience manufactory by the Counts. After the dissolution of Herzebrock Abbey, the religious inmates from there were quartered, and since the mid-19th century, the building has been inhabited by members of the princely family, interrupted by its use as a convalescent home for mothers during World War II.
