Bothmer Castle
In Northwest Mecklenburg, Bothmer Castle is a Baroque complex and an example of 18th-century architecture in Germany. Located on the outskirts of the small town of Klütz, the listed complex features multi-winged architecture and a rectangular garden island, together forming the largest preserved Baroque ensemble in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Festoon Alley leading to the castle is considered a garden monument.
History+
Bothmer Castle was built between 1726 and 1732 on behalf of Imperial Count Hans Caspar von Bothmer, a diplomat in the service of the English royal family. Conceived as the ancestral seat of his family, the construction was inspired by English and Dutch models. For over two centuries, the castle remained in the possession of the Bothmer family, along with numerous surrounding estates. After World War II, the property was expropriated, and during the GDR era, the castle was used as a retirement home. Following a period of vacancy and decay, during which a private investor failed to implement a utilization concept, the castle is now owned by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A fiduciary foundation under the umbrella of the German Foundation for Monument Protection supports the state in the renovation and restoration of the building.

Today, Bothmer Castle is managed by a foundation and is undergoing renovation. The interiors are currently unfurnished and vacant but can be visited during occasional guided tours. The park is accessible.
