Bothmer Castle
Bothmer Castle, an impressive Baroque complex in Northwest Mecklenburg, is an outstanding example of 18th-century architecture in Germany. Located on the outskirts of the small town of Klütz, the listed complex captivates with its multi-winged architecture and a rectangular garden island, together forming the largest preserved Baroque ensemble in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Particularly noteworthy is the Festoon Alley leading to the castle, considered a unique garden monument.
History+
Bothmer Castle was built between 1726 and 1732 on behalf of Imperial Count Hans Caspar von Bothmer, a diplomat in the service of the English royal family. Conceived as the ancestral seat of his family, the construction was inspired by English and Dutch models. For over two centuries, the castle remained in the possession of the Bothmer family, along with numerous surrounding estates. After World War II, the property was expropriated, and during the GDR era, the castle was used as a retirement home. Following a period of vacancy and decay, during which a private investor failed to implement a utilization concept, the castle is now owned by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A fiduciary foundation under the umbrella of the German Foundation for Monument Protection supports the state in the extensive renovation and restoration of the historic building.
