Brandenstein Castle

Brandenstein is known to have been mentioned in 1362 as "Ghezerik" and in 1459 as "Iserigk" and was in the possession of a family von Krussow (Krüssow) during this period. The history of Brandenstein is closely linked to the von Arnim family. In 1507, Lippold I von Arnim decided to sell his possessions in Zehdenick, Brandenburg, to establish a new family empire in the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. In addition to the estates in Hohenseeden, Krüssau, and Theessen, he also acquired the Brandenstein estate as a fief on May 29, 1507.

After the territorial sovereignty passed from the Archbishopric to the Brandenburg Duchy of Magdeburg in 1680, the locality was assigned to the new Jerichow district. This district, now under Prussian rule, was divided into two districts in 1785. Brandenstein came to the Jerichow II district. From 1807, during the Westphalian interim rule in Magdeburg, the locality belonged to the Kurmark and, after the end of the Wars of Liberation, to the Jerichow II district of the Magdeburg administrative region of the Prussian Province of Saxony. In 1928, the previously independent estate districts were dissolved and incorporated. Brandenstein was also affected by this, becoming part of Krüssau. The von Arnim family was dispossessed and expelled by the communists in 1945.

After the expropriation, Brandenstein Manor served as a state children's home. In the course of the GDR administrative reform, the district was renamed Kreis Genthin in 1952. In 1994, Kreis Genthin was merged with Kreis Burg to form the new Landkreis Jerichower Land.

In 1992, Bernd von Arnim bought back Brandenstein Manor and the 1250-hectare Brandenstein Forest from the district. In the manor, which was extensively renovated, he established the forest administration, which has since become the largest employer in the region. In 2007, the family celebrated "500 Years of Arnims in Brandenstein" in the village with great public participation.
