Braunschweig Palace, once the residence of the Welf dukes, is a striking building in the heart of Braunschweig. It combines historical reconstruction with modern use, now housing cultural institutions and a shopping center.
History+
The history of Braunschweig Palace began with a first building, constructed from 1717 under Hermann Korb and completed only in 1791. However, this building was destroyed by fire on the night of September 7-8, 1830. A second building was then erected under Carl Theodor Ottmer by 1841. During World War II, this structure suffered severe damage and was demolished in 1960 by decision of the Braunschweig City Council, a unique decision in West Germany. From 2005 to 2007, a new building was constructed on the same site, largely reconstructing the three-winged form of the Ottmer Palace and integrating a shopping center.
