Breitenburg Castle

The history of Breitenburg Castle begins in the Middle Ages when the area belonged to Bordesholm Monastery. In 1526, the military commander Johann Rantzau acquired the lands and began constructing a manor house on a overgrown dune, known as Breitenberg, starting in 1530. To protect the area from floods, a dike was built, and the castle hill was surrounded by a moat. Under his son Heinrich Rantzau, the complex was expanded into one of the most secure fortresses in the Danish-controlled territory, with further enlargements from 1565 onwards. During this period, Breitenburg became a significant center of humanism. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was besieged and stormed by Wallenstein's troops in 1627, suffering extensive damage and the looting of its extensive library. Another looting occurred in 1643 by Swedish forces. Despite multiple attempts at reconstruction, the castle gradually fell into disrepair in the 18th century as the Rantzau family favored other residences. It was not until the 19th century, under Conrad Peter Count zu Rantzau, that a gradual reconstruction began, giving the castle its current historicist appearance, which was only completed around the turn of the 20th century.

Breitenburg Castle is situated in Itzehoe-Breitenburg in the Steinburg district, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 12 meters above sea level.

Breitenburg Castle remains in private ownership to this day and is inhabited. Public access is limited.
