Bremgarten Castle

The Schlössli is a castle-like bourgeois house in Bremgarten in the canton of Aargau (Switzerland), which emerged from a medieval castle. It is built in a late Gothic-early Baroque transitional style and is located at the northeast corner of the upper town, at the highest point of a hill rising steeply above the Reuss.

The foundation of the building contains remains of a high medieval keep, dating from before the town's founding and belonging to the settlement "Vilingen". The first documented mention of the "turn ze Bremgarten" occurred in 1238, and from about 1300, the name "hus ze Bremgarten" also existed. The building consisted of two towers and served as the residence of Habsburg servants who managed their lords' possessions in the Reuss Valley from here.

From 1253 until about 1500, the castle was owned by the noble family of Sengen and then fell to the town. Hospital master Johann Balthasar Honegger acquired the building in 1641 for 2700 guilders and had the younger of the two towers fundamentally rebuilt and extended. As part of these works, the Schlössli received its current appearance as a bourgeois house. The Platzturm, the older of the two towers, collapsed in 1802 and was not rebuilt. In the 18th and 19th centuries, numerous changes were made, especially to the interior of the building. After the Schlössli briefly belonged to the town again, it has been in private ownership since 1882.
