Bremgarten Castle, also known as Schlössli, is a historic building in the Swiss town of Bremgarten in the canton of Aargau. It is on the northeastern corner of the upper town, on a hill rising steeply above the Reuss river, and represents a transitional style between late Gothic and early Baroque.

History+

The castle's origins date back a long way: its foundations contain remnants of a high medieval keep that belonged to the settlement of «Vilingen» even before the town was founded. The «turn ze Bremgarten» was first mentioned in a document in 1238, and from about 1300 it was also known as «hus ze Bremgarten». The building, which originally consisted of two towers, served as a residence for Habsburg retainers who administered their possessions in the Reuss valley from here. From 1253 to about 1500, it was owned by the noble family of Sengen before falling to the town.
