Brohleck Castle

The origins of Brohleck date back to 1325, when Johann Burggraf von Rheineck enfeoffed his property, the castrum or fortalitium Brule (Brohl), to the Trier Archbishop Balduin von Luxemburg. In 1402, the castle was again granted as a fief to a descendant of Johann Burggraf von Rheineck. It remained in the possession of the Burggraves of Rheineck until after 1428, before passing to the Metternich zu Sommersberg family, who appear as owners in 1449. A marriage in 1664 led to the property falling to the von Hees family. Their heirs later sold the castle to Carl Joseph Dinget, an assessor at the electoral court in Koblenz. In the mid-19th century, the Stenzel brothers, grandsons of his son, inhabited the castle. After Theodor Hochkeppel (from 1862), the castle passed to the siblings von Schell and from them in 1888 to J. B. Michiels, who rebuilt and enlarged the castle house. The Michiels family later leased the property as a boarding school for boys.
