Brohleck Castle

Brohleck Castle – also known as Augustaburg – is a villa-like castle building on the Rhine above Brohl-Lützing (Ahrweiler district) dating from 1891.

In 1325, Johann Burggraf von Rheineck pledged the castrum or fortalitium Brule (Brohl), which had previously been his private property, as a fief to the Archbishop of Trier, Balduin of Luxembourg (Codex Rheno-Mosellanus III, I No. 132). In 1402, a descendant named Johann Burggraf von Rheineck received the castle as a fief. It remained a fief of the Burggrafen von Rheineck until after 1428. Then it came to the von Metternich zu Sommersberg, who appear as owners of the castle in 1449. In 1664, the presumed Palatine sub-fief passed by marriage to the von Hees. Their heirs sold it to Carl Joseph Dinget, assessor at the electoral court in Koblenz. In the mid-19th century, the grandsons of his son, the Stenzel brothers, lived in the castle. From Theodor Hochkeppel (since 1862), the castle came to the siblings von Schell and from them in 1888 to J. B. Michiels, who rebuilt and enlarged the castle house. The Michiels family then leased the house as a boys' boarding school.

In 1938, the castle belonged to a Munich bank and served as the Reich Leader School of the Reich Labor Service (RAD). In April 1942, about 100 Jewish citizens of the Ahrweiler district were housed here until their deportation to the concentration camps.

From the 1950s onwards, several Brohl families lived in rented apartments in the building. Since the 1970s, the castle was left to itself and is now being renovated by the current owner.

The east wing of the house still contains a few remains of the castle complex. In the forecourt lay the tombstone of Bertram von Metternich (died 1639), electoral Cologne bailiff in Andernach.
