In the Baden-Württemberg city of Bruchsal stands Bruchsal Palace, a Baroque residential complex. It once served as a prince-bishop's residence and is now a museum.

History+

The construction of the palace began in 1720 under Prince-Bishop Damian Hugo Philipp von Schönborn-Buchheim, to replace the destroyed bishop's palace. The original plans for the three-wing complex came from Maximilian von Welsch. From 1731, Balthasar Neumann took over the construction management and created the central staircase, which is considered a masterpiece of Baroque staircase architecture. It leads to the two grand ballrooms, the Prince's Hall and the Marble Hall. The Lombard artist Giovanni Francesco Marchini contributed to the design between 1731 and 1736 with his frescoes and facade paintings.
