Museum

Brundlund Castle, a historic moated castle in Aabenraa, Denmark, is distinguished by its long history as an administrative seat and its current function as an art museum. Originally built as a fortress, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle over the centuries and today stands as a significant cultural monument.

History+

The origins of Brundlund Castle date back to 1411, when Queen Margrethe I commissioned the construction of a moated castle in Aabenraa after the town came into her possession. For centuries, the complex served as an administrative seat for royal, ducal, and municipal administrations. In the 16th century, the fortress underwent a transformation into a Renaissance castle. In the early 19th century, between 1805 and 1807, the castle was partly redesigned in the Neoclassical style under C. F. Hansen. After the last resident moved out in 1996, the city of Aabenraa took over the property and established an art museum starting in 1998, which received its current appearance after extensive restoration from 1983 to 1985.
