Brundlund Castle
In Aabenraa, Denmark, Brundlund Castle is a historic moated castle that served as an administrative seat and now functions as an art museum. Originally built as a fortress, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle.
History+
The origins of Brundlund Castle date back to 1411, when Queen Margarethe I commissioned the construction of a moated castle in Aabenraa. For centuries, the complex served as an administrative seat for royal, ducal, and municipal administrations. In the 16th century, the fortress underwent a transformation into a Renaissance castle. Between 1805 and 1807, the castle was partly redesigned in the Neoclassical style under C. F. Hansen. After the last resident moved out in 1996, the city of Aabenraa took over the property and established an art museum starting in 1998. It received its current appearance after restoration from 1983 to 1985.

Brundlund Castle houses a publicly accessible art museum. It exhibits Danish painting and sculptures from the 19th century to the present, with a focus on artists from Southern Jutland. The former castle mill, which once served as a bridge tower, is used as a café on summer weekends. Sculptures by contemporary Danish sculptors can be seen in the castle park.
