Buchenau Castle

The construction of Buchenau Castle took place between 1611 and 1618 under Georg Melchior von Buchenau and his wife Agnes von Schwalbach. The Generalshaus, the oldest building on the site, was already built in 1550 by Georg von Buchenau and Susanne von Mansbach. In 1680, the Buchenau family sold the castle to the Prince-Abbot of Fulda to settle debts. Through an exchange, it later came into the possession of the Schenck zu Schweinsberg family, who moved to Buchenau in 1694. This family, who had acquired their property in Burghaun through marriage to a von Haune, derived their income from the forest property belonging to the castle and a later brickworks. At the beginning of the 20th century, alterations were made: in 1904, the Generalshaus received a tower modeled after the one at Wartburg Castle, and in 1910, the Wedding Tower was added to the castle. After the bankruptcy and suicide of Hans Schenck zu Schweinsberg in 1912, the castle changed owners several times.
