Buchheim Castle

Schloss Buchheim was built in 1759 on the walls of a water castle by the Stürzel von Buchheim family.

The history of the site, however, dates back much further. Already in the 12th century, a fortified tower stood here, which was gradually expanded into a mighty water castle. This castle served for centuries as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Buchheim, a powerful noble family that significantly shaped the history of the region.

In the mid-18th century, the old water castle no longer met the representative demands of the Stürzel von Buchheim family. They decided to demolish large parts of the medieval complex and erect a new, modern castle in the Baroque style. The construction work lasted several years, and the result was a magnificent three-winged complex that still impresses today.

Schloss Buchheim is a prime example of South German Baroque architecture. The castle is characterized by its clear, symmetrical structure and its richly decorated facades.

• The central building, the so-called "Corps de Logis", houses the most important state rooms, including the magnificent ballroom and the family's private apartments.
• The two side wings enclose a spacious courtyard of honor, which is framed by arcades.
• A special feature is the castle chapel, which is integrated into the east wing and is decorated with impressive ceiling frescoes.

The interior of the castle is equally impressive. Numerous rooms are preserved in their original condition and give an idea of the opulent lifestyle of the nobility in the Baroque era. Valuable furniture, paintings, and tapestries adorn the rooms and bear witness to the artistic taste of the former inhabitants.

Today, Schloss Buchheim is privately owned and is inhabited by the descendants of the Stürzel von Buchheim family. Parts of the castle are open to the public and can be visited as part of guided tours.

In addition, the castle regularly hosts cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions, and theater performances. The historic ambience provides a unique setting for these events and attracts numerous visitors every year.

The castle park, designed in the English landscape style, also invites you to take a stroll. With its old trees, picturesque ponds, and hidden paths, it offers an oasis of peace and relaxation.
