The first documented mention of Bündheim dates back to 1251. A decisive turn in the town's history occurred in 1573, when Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel relocated the administrative office from Harzburg here and had an official residence built. In the same year, the Duke founded a brass foundry, based on an older smelting operation, using furnace calamine from furnace slag as an additive for copper processing. The original official residence was destroyed in 1626 during the Thirty Years' War by Tilly's soldiers.
