The Castle can be visited

Bürgeln Castle, an early Classicist building with Rococo furnishings, was transformed into its current form in the 18th century. It was originally a provostry of St. Blasien Monastery.

History+

Around 1120, a church dedicated to St. John was already owned by the Knights of Kaltenbach. This family bequeathed their property, including Bürgelnberg, to St. Blasien Monastery. There, Abbot Berthold I founded a cell around 1126 and later a provostry. A fire destroyed the church and monastic cells in 1267, but Abbot Arnold II oversaw the reconstruction. The provostry fulfilled both secular administrative tasks and spiritual duties, including the care of Sitzenkirch Monastery. It was plundered during the Peasants' War in 1525, and with the Reformation in 1556, it lost its spiritual functions. French troops severely damaged the provostry in the War of the Palatine Succession in 1689.
