Burg Castle

The origin of the castle lies in an old fortress, which was demolished in 1721 and on its walls the castle was built.

The first documented mention of Warthausen dates back to 1160. At that time, the Lords of Warthausen, a Swabian noble family, resided here. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, passing through various noble families such as the Counts of Montfort and the Truchsessen of Waldburg.

In the 17th century, the castle was acquired by the Counts of Stadion. Under their patronage, the medieval fortress was transformed into a magnificent Baroque palace. The old castle was demolished, and a new, representative building was erected on its foundations. The construction work, which began in 1719, was completed in 1721.

Schloss Warthausen presents itself as a three-winged complex with a central courtyard. The main facade, facing the park, is characterized by a richly decorated portal and a stately balcony. The building's architecture reflects the typical features of Baroque style, with its symmetrical arrangement, opulent ornamentation, and impressive scale.

Inside, the palace boasts a wealth of artistic treasures. The grand staircase, adorned with frescoes and stucco work, leads to the upper floors. The state rooms, including the ballroom, the dining hall, and various salons, are furnished with exquisite furniture, paintings, and tapestries from the 18th and 19th centuries. Particularly noteworthy is the castle chapel, which houses a valuable altar and ceiling paintings.

Surrounding Schloss Warthausen is a spacious park, which was laid out in the 18th century in the French style. The park features meticulously manicured lawns, geometrically arranged flowerbeds, and impressive tree avenues. In the 19th century, parts of the park were redesigned in the English landscape style, adding winding paths, picturesque bridges, and romantic follies.

The park also contains several historical buildings, including an orangery, a grotto, and a small pavilion. Today, the castle park is a popular destination for walks and offers a tranquil retreat amidst nature.

Today, Schloss Warthausen is privately owned and regularly hosts cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions. The historic premises provide a unique setting for a variety of occasions. The castle chapel is also a popular venue for weddings and baptisms.
