On a rocky plateau above the Burgkhammer dam lies Burgk Castle, a former princely residence of the House of Reuss. The complex now houses a museum and is known for its medieval details and a Silbermann organ.

History+

As early as the Middle Ages, the bailiffs of Gera, ancestors of the House of Reuss, erected a castle at this location. After a temporary sale to the Teutonic Order, it returned to the Gera bailiffs and later to the elder line of the House of Reuss (Greiz). In the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex underwent renovations that transformed its character into a pleasure palace, including the creation of a park. From 1768, it served as the residence of the elder line of the princely House of Reuss. After World War II, the castle was expropriated and opened to the public in the early 1950s.
