Rurgrain Castle

The origins of Schloss Burgrain date back: between 784 and 811, Bishop Atto of Freising had a first fortress built. From 1140 to 1290, the Lords of Burgrain, who served as Freisinger ministerials, inhabited the complex. Around 1200, the present-day medieval castle complex was built, a four-winged structure with a freestanding keep and a neck ditch. In 1227, the castle became the princely-Freisinger burgrave's seat of the Burgrain dominion. A conflict with the Counts of Haag led to the castle's capture in 1317. Under Bishop Nikodemus, additions and alterations were made in the first half of the 15th century, including the Fürstenstock with a large hall. A fire in 1639 led to further modifications. Prince-Bishop Johann Franz Eckher von Kapfing had the castle church of St. George built in 1723.
