Burgscheidungen Castle

In the Burgenland district of Saxony-Anhalt, Burgscheidungen Castle is a Baroque palace whose origins trace back to an 8th-century castle. The complex is now part of the 'Gartenträume Sachsen-Anhalt' (Garden Dreams Saxony-Anhalt) project.
History+
The castle hill was already settled in the Neolithic period. An alleged mention of it as the site of a battle between the Thuringian King Herminafried and the Franks in the 6th century by the Saxon historian Widukind of Corvey in the 10th century is now questioned by modern research due to a lack of archaeological finds from the Merovingian period. In the late 9th century, Scheidungen was listed as a tithe-paying locality in a Hersfeld Abbey register. The castle came into the possession of the Bishopric of Bamberg in 1069, which then enfeoffed various noble families with it until 1803. From 1128 to 1667, it was the ancestral seat of the ministerial family von Scheidingen. From 1630, the brothers von Hoym were enfeoffed with Burgscheidungen. One of their descendants, Anna Constantia von Brockdorff, later became Countess Cosel and mistress of Augustus the Strong.
