One of the oldest medieval fortifications in the region, Burleswagen Castle, is on a spur above the Jagst Valley. This structure is located in the hamlet of Burleswagen in Baden-Württemberg.

History+

The origins of the current castle date back a long way. The complex was presumably built in the second half of the 11th century, suggested by the mention of a family "de Burlougesuac" in 1085. The castle itself was first documented in 1323, when King Ludwig the Bavarian granted it as an imperial fief to Werner von Burleswagen. Ownership changed hands frequently, including the Knights of Üxküll-Gyllenband. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered destruction but was subsequently rebuilt. Since 1923, it has been in the private possession of the Thorban family.
