Burtenbach Castle

Schloss Horneck, majestically situated on a rock spur above the Neckar, is a building with a rich and eventful history. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but its present appearance is the result of numerous transformations and extensions over the centuries.

The first documented mention of a castle on this site dates back to the 13th century. At that time, it served as a strategic stronghold to control shipping on the Neckar and the surrounding trade routes. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was repeatedly expanded and fortified by its respective owners.

A significant turning point in the history of Schloss Horneck was the 16th century. In the years 1556-57, the castle was extensively rebuilt and transformed into a Renaissance-style palace. This conversion gave the building a more residential character, while still retaining its defensive capabilities.

Another decisive phase of construction followed in the 18th century. After a devastating fire, the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1737 and 1740 under the direction of Albrecht Heinrich Schertlin. This period gave Schloss Horneck its characteristic Baroque splendor, which is still visible today in many architectural details.

The 19th century brought further significant changes to Schloss Horneck. Between 1837 and 1840, under Friedrich von Halder, the castle was expanded to its present form. These alterations aimed to adapt the building to the living requirements of the time and to give it a more representative appearance.

Today, Schloss Horneck presents itself as an impressive architectural ensemble that reflects the various epochs of its construction history. It combines elements of the Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th-century classicism, making it a unique historical monument.

After a varied history of ownership and use, Schloss Horneck today serves as a cultural and historical center. It houses various institutions and is regularly used for events, exhibitions, and conferences.
