Calberwisch Castle
Calberwisch Castle is a historical monument in the Düsedau district of the city of Osterburg in Saxony-Anhalt. An older building made of wood with solid foundations was restored in 1692 and demolished in 1839 due to dilapidation.
The new castle building was constructed in 1875 under Bernhard von Jagow, Rittmeister of the Potsdam "Garde du Corps", and his wife Johanna, daughter of Count Pourtalés, in the Neo-Renaissance style. The architects were Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden (Berlin). This gives it supra-regional significance. It fits into the series of Gropius' numerous designs for villas in Berlin and its surroundings.
After the owner family fled in 1945, it served, among other things, as accommodation for war refugees, a daycare center, a supermarket, and a youth club. Since 1995, it has housed a restaurant with guest rooms.
