In the Beiersdorf district of Coburg, Callenberg Castle stands on a wooded hill. It once served as a hunting and summer residence and was for a long time the main domicile of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

History+

The name Callenberg was first documented in 1122, when an ancestral castle of the Knights of Callenberg presumably already existed. Ownership changed hands multiple times, including the Diocese of Würzburg and the Counts of Henneberg. In 1317, the estate came as a fief to the Lords of Sternberg. After the extinction of this line in 1588, the fief reverted to Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg, who had the castle converted into a Renaissance hunting lodge starting in 1592. The castle chapel was consecrated in 1618. In 1826, due to a reorganization of the duchies, the castle returned to the Coburg line of the Wettins.
