Cappenberg Castle

In Selm-Cappenberg in the Unna district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Cappenberg Castle, once a Premonstratensian monastery, is located. Surrounded by beech forests, it offers a view over the Lippe floodplains to the eastern Ruhr area. Today, it is a cultural venue with exhibitions and events.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 11th century when the Counts of Cappenberg had their ancestral seat here. In 1122, Gottfried II of Cappenberg, the last count, founded the first Premonstratensian monastery in the German-speaking world at this site. After secularization in 1803, the monastery became a manorial estate and was acquired in 1816 by the Prussian statesman Freiherr vom Stein, who made it his retirement home. Later, the property passed to the Counts of Kanitz.
